Spelling inventories are designed to test a student's spelling knowledge by checking which "features" they are able to spell - for instance, short vowels, digraphs, etc. This is all explained in the book Words Their Way and you can also find many copies of their inventories on the web by Googling "spelling inventory". The most commonly used one in year 1 is the Primary Spelling Inventory.
There were a few created by the ACT DET BEE Spelling team too, and I created one of my own. It is very useful to have access to a number of different inventories to avoid the risk that students learn how to spell the words in the inventory if you use the same one repeatedly.
was created in an attempt to remove some of the words and sentences in the standard Primary Spelling Inventory that I thought would not be as familiar to Australian children. I ended up with the word "shorn" in there, so I am not sure it is ideal for young primary students, but it may be useful.
Here are some inventories developed by the ACT BEE Spelling team. These do not all come with matching sentences - I think the sentences are important to ensure that everyone is given a fair chance to hear the word in context, so at some stage I hope to write some matching sentences as a starting point.
The middle primary inventories include more difficult words so that you can assess children with more advanced spelling knowledge. Several of these were developed by the ACT Literacy and Numeracy Team.
